Some of My Favourites…

I read as a form of escape.  The books I choose always transports me away from reality into the story and lives of different people who are much more interesting than I am, who lives much more interesting lives and meet much more interesting people.  It is not because I do not live in reality but it is precisely because I know reality so well that I need to find a place to hide and recuperate in from time to time.  Here are some of my favourites :
~ Splintered by A. G. Howard
I have to admit, I bought this book because I was attracted to the cover.  But it soon turn out to be one of my favourite books of all time, and for some very simple reasons.  It is a book about magic and it is based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass.  I love any books that gives a twist to those fairy tales of old that we know and love and this is just one of them.  It pictures a much darker and mysterious Wonderland than the one we know and the characters are not what they seem at all.  This is the first book to a trilogy.  The second book, Unhinged, is as nerve wrecking as the first.  Only read if you are patient because the last book of the trilogy will be out most probably January next year.  There’s a cliffhanger ending in Unhinged but Splintered should be fine on it’s own.
~ Every Day by David Levithan
What if every day you wake up in the body of a different person and hijack their life for just one day?  How would you live your life?  What kind of life would that actually be?  What if one day you wake up and you fell in love with this girl who is the girlfriend of the guy whose body you are currently taking over?  This book is a tearjerker for me.  It is the first book of this author that I’ve read and I believe it won’t be my last.
~ Terrier by Tamora Pierce
She is one of my favourite authors of all time aside from Diana Wynne Jones.  Her stories are mostly based in a fictional kingdom called Tortall.  Terrier is a prequel to her earlier works although it is her most recent book based in Tortall.  Set in olden times, this is the story of Rebekah Cooper, of how she enters the Provost Guard and becomes one of the most famous hunter the realm has ever seen.
~ The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider
I got hooked when I heard my friend read the first sentence from the book.  “Sometimes I think that everyone has a tragedy waiting for them, that the people buying milk in their pajamas or picking their noses at stoplights could only be moments away from disaster.”  This is a book set in high school and is about one of the most popular guys in the school encountering his own personal disaster and how he learned to accept it.  The conversations between the characters are very interesting and funny and had me in stitches from laughing too much.  It is a good book about friendship and love and learning how to live instead of just existing.
~ Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who was or still is a fangirl.  Have you ever gone all crazy over a boy band or a series to the point of even writing fanfictions about them online?  Well, I am one.  Though I don’t write fanfictions, I do love to read them and sometimes I find myself wondering what if this were not to happen in the story or what if this person ended up with another instead, what would happen?  Fangirls are labelled as crazy and obsessed because we just get so excited when we are talking about our fandom but is that really how fangirls are like?  Reading this will put you in the shoes of a quiet and introverted fangirl who writes fanfictions about a non-canon relationship between two boys from her favourite book series Simon Snow which is fashioned after J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter.

The Forbidden Game

The Forbidden Game

As much as I would like for a happy ending for Jenny & co., I really do hope that there is another ending to the trilogy where Jenny actually ends up with Julian instead.  That instead of choosing to go back to her real life and be normal, she will stay with Julian in the Shadow World and be the light to his darkness.  Julian is able to love because of Jenny and I am sure because of that, Julian will never turn into weird creatures like the other Shadow Man before him.  I sure wonder what ending that would be like…
